The Metaverse - Past, Present, and Future

The Metaverse Series - Introduction

I’ve been fascinated by the idea of the Metaverse for almost 20 years, this dream of immersive, shared virtual spaces where people could connect, create, and collaborate across the boundaries of geography, culture, and even reality. Over the years, I’ve witnessed the early excitement, the big promises, the headlines, the crashes, and the disillusionment. From the rise of Second Life to the NFT boom and the gold rush of virtual land speculation, it’s easy to see why so many have declared the Metaverse dead. But I don’t believe that’s the end of the story.

This article series is my attempt to explore the Metaverse from every angle, its past, its flaws, its lost potential, and most importantly, its future. I want to look beyond the hype and the failures and focus on the original promise: a space shaped not by billion-dollar marketing campaigns, but by real people with imagination, purpose, and a desire to build something meaningful. I still believe the Metaverse can become what we once hoped for, a vast, open canvas for expression, collaboration, and community. And I believe its foundations must be reimagined with care, humility, and human values at the center.

This series isn’t about pointing fingers or bashing the companies and individuals who’ve tried, and sometimes failed to bring the Metaverse to life. On the contrary, I deeply respect the visionaries who dared to take those early steps, invest in new ideas, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. Every experiment, every misstep, and every shortcoming teaches us something vital about the challenges we face in building a shared digital future. Without these bold attempts, we wouldn’t have the foundation or the clarity we have today. It’s time to learn from these experiences, honor the courage it took to try, and work together to build something more sustainable, open, and user-centered.

That’s the main reason why I’m working on a web-based virtual world platform for many years now, not because I think I know better, but because I believe we need a new starting point. A platform built with and for developers, creators, educators, artists, and anyone else who wants to help build a better digital future. My hope is to connect with like-minded people who see the Metaverse not as a product to sell, but as a living world to shape together.

If you're curious about where the Metaverse came from, why it faltered, and how it might still grow into something truly remarkable, I invite you to join me on this journey. Let’s explore what went wrong, and what could go wonderfully right.
